Classics, revivals, and more hit the screens of our area. Below are the screenings by theater, for the next two weeks.
The Texas Theater
231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/
The Devils (1971) – The national release of Ken Russell’s once-banned film whose existence is far less than its scandalous X rated legacy.
Begins screening on Friday October 16th
Kwaidan (1964) – I’m so glad this Japanese film is finding its footing around Halloween. Four folk tales, filmed beautifully and with some eerie images and ideas.
Screens on Sunday October 18th
Ganja and Hess (1973) – Definite alternative Halloween viewing, Bill Gunn’s very independent film stars Duane Jones and Marlene Clark with a unique spin on the vampire tale.
Screens on Thursday October 22nd
Begotten (1989)
The Craft (1996) – Two very different cult favorites- “The Craft” for its 90’s emo/gothstatus and E. Elias Merhige’s almost avant garde tripfest that, for years, was the token film to find on the torrent sites. Both should look great on the big screen.
Both films screen on Friday October 23rd
Marie Antionette (2006) – Sofia Coppola’s film about the free-spirited French monarch. Screens in a 4K remastered edition.
Screens on Saturday October 24th
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) – Childhood reverie aside, this presentation will feature an intro and Q&A from actress Julie Dawn Cole, who played Veruca Salt in the film.
Screens on Tuesday October 27th
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) – Screens as part of May May’s Nightmares drag show.
Screens on Wednesday October 28th
Wild at Heart (1992)
Nosferatu (1922) – The best vampire film ever?
Lynch’s film and Murnau’s masterpiece both screen on Friday October 30th
Spacy
1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station). Information about the venue can be found here.
A Bigger Splash (1973) – Not the Luca Guadagnino/Tilda Swinton film but a documentary about painter David Kockney.
Screens on Saturday October 17th
Sound and Fury (1988) – Provocateur Jean Claude Brisseau’s late 80’s film about the relationship of two juveniles. Brisseau is hit-or-miss for me. This film was one I didn’t prefer, however its a 4k screening.
Screens on Sunday October 18th
Coherence (2013) – An overlooked lo-fi science fiction meditation about a group of people dealing with the ramifications of a mysterious comet passing overhead.
Screens on Tuesday October 20th
Fangs (1981) – Described as Egypt’s answer to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. Very interesting. All proceeds benefit Dahnoun Mutual Aid.
Screens on Friday October 23rd
Chained For Life (2018) – Fans of “A Different Man” will recognize Adam Pearson in this film about an actress (Jess Wexler) struggling to adapt to her disfigured co-star on stage.
Screens on Monday October 26th
Requiem For a Vampire (1971) – Not my favorite Jean Rollin, gut great for anyone wanting to wade their toes in his fascinating waters as a mood-horror filmmaker.
Screens on Friday October 30th and Saturday October 31st
Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films
Atonement (2007) – Joe Wright’s beautiful film starring Kiera Knightley and James McAvoy.
Begins screening on Friday October 18th
Night of the Living Dead (1968) – This had to be screening somewhere, or it just wouldn’t be spooky season.
Screens on Tuesday October 20th
Frankenweenie (2012) – Tim Burton’s beloved Halloween classic.
Screens on Friday October 23rd
Notorious (1946) – Hitchcock’s film screens on Wednesday October 28th
Neruda (2016) – Pablo Larrain is an exciting filmmaker, and this film about poet Pablo Neruda is a middling film for him, but still an interesting watch.
Screens on Thursday October 29th
DFW Alamo Drafthouse Locations
Schedule for all the locations in our area can be located here so check the site for theater availability.
Spookies (1986) – Kids of the 80’s will vividly remember the VHS box cover for this film. Holds up well and it’s a good time.
Screens on Tuesday October 20th
Poltergeist (1982) – A classic of the genre that scared so many people of its generation. Like Romero, it’s just not Halloween without this film playing somewhere.
Screens on Sunday October 25th
Cemetary Man (1994) – So I just saw this Italian shocker for the first time earlier this year, and I was not prepared for the many permutations it goes through. Solid entertainment.
Screens on Tuesday October 27th
The Exorcist II (1977) – The surrounding conversation about John Boorman’s sequel to the William Friedkin classic is so great, it spawned a documentary this year about its making. Now’s your chance to see the film.
Screens on Wednesday October 28th
Halloween weekend screenings across the area include Halloween (1978), Trick or Treat (1986), Scream (1996), and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
Dallas Angelika
5321 E. Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75206. For all showtimes, events, and tickets visit https://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/dallas
The Lighthouse (2019) – One of Robert Eggers’ films not to study a monster of myth and lore, this seaside film is probably just as horrific for its bone-chilling landscape and pairing of Willem DaFoe and Robert Pattinson.
Screens on Monday October 19th
Suspicion (1949) – The Angelika is always the destination for your Hitchcock fix, regardless of the time of year.
Screens on Wednesday October 21st
Dr. Strangelove (1964) – Do we take for granted how influential Kubrick’s black comedy really was? Especially when it’s cribbed so deliberately and unsuccessfully with Inarritu’s latest film? Now you can see for yourself the greatness of Kubrick’s film.
Screens on Monday October 26th
Vertigo (1958) – One of the most perfect films ever made.
Screens on Wednesday October 28th
Wild at Heart (1990) – David Lynch’s wild and wooly film.
Screens on Friday October 30th
Psycho (1960) – Screens on Saturday October 31st
