More classic screenings for the next two weeks. If I omit any or have suggestions, please leave me a comment!

The Texas Theater

231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/

Deep Blue Sea (1999) – Such fun seeing this in a theater on opening night back in the day. As part of the 1999 film year retrospective, come and experience the fun of this film for yourself. And watch out for the Samuel Jackson scene.

Screens on Saturday July 13th.

Footloose (1984) – Another year retrospective, called the Class of ’84, this iconic teen film launched Kevin Bacon into stardom.

Screens on Sunday July 14th

Piranha (1978) – Joe Dante’s 1978 film, Piranha is the latest to get a revisit after the recent passing of filmmaker/producer Roger Corman. Bloody, B grade fun.

Screens on Tuesday July 16th.

The Insider (1999) – I love, love Michael Mann films, and watching his corporate whistleblower character study today feels just as revelatory as it did 25 years ago. The handheld camera, the swift and fleeting editing, the performances…. all pitch perfect examples of the modernity that filmmaker Mann always strives for. His masterpiece Heat (1995) screens as well on Saturday July 20th. I saw the 4k screening last year and it’s a monumental achievement to see on the big screen.

The Insider screens on Thursday July 18th.

Purple Rain (1984) – The 40th anniversary of this film also includes a dance party!

Screens on Friday July 19th.

Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films

Claire’s Knee (1971) – Part of the My Favorite Films series, the Magnolia at the Modern series presents one of Eric Rohmer’s classic tales of love/lust in a very French way.

Screens on Wednesday July 17th at 2pm

Historic Palace Theater in Grapevine

300 S. Main St. Grapevine, TX 76051. For all showtimes and events, visit https://www.grapevinetexasusa.com/palace-arts-center/ And by the way, most tickets are $6.00! Awesome

Flubber (1997) – The Palace Theater ‘summer for kids’ series continues with a robust calendar continuing this week with this (typically) loony Robin Williams film.

Screens on Wednesday July 10th

The Land Before Time IV (1996) – Animated film in the Land Before Time series.

Screens on Thursday July 11th

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) – It wouldn’t be summer without the screening of this magnificent Indiana Jones film.

Screens on Thursday July 11th

9 to 5 (1980) – Ok, I suppose this film could be called innocent fare, but this diabolically subversive black comedy was staple viewing for young me in the early heydays of HBO (my family was like number 180 to have the home video service) and most likely developed my fascination with all three, Dolly, Lily and Jane. Mostly reclaimed for its ahead-of-the-curve humor, see it again on the big screen and revel in what mainstream films could pack into their subtext in the early 80’s.

Screens on Friday July 12th

Madagascar (2005) – The animated film that was a huge hit returns to the big screen.

Screens on Tuesday July 16th

The Borrowers (1997) – I’ve never seen this family film, but it seems to fall in that late 90’s rage of small CGI things invading suburbia. Should be a good blast from the past. Stars John Goodman.

Screens on Wednesday July 17th

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) – Another perennial summer retro favorite.

Screens on Thursday July 18th

Summertime (1955) – David Lean’s Euro-romance stars Katherine Hepburn falling in love in picturesque Rome.

Screens on Friday July 19th

Dallas Angelika

5321 E. Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75206. For all showtimes, events, and tickets visit https://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/dallas

Spirited Away (2001) – The Angelika’s tribute to Studio Ghibli continues with one of the most recognizable films in the studio’s history… Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.

Screens on Wednesday July 10th

The Room (2003) – The film that spawned a thousand memes and viewing parties comes again to the Angelika. See it with friends and lots of people to bathe in the ludicrousness.

Screens on Friday July 12th

King Kong (1933) – Screens as part of the ‘Classic Black and White’ film series.

Screens on Monday July 15th

Spacy

1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station).

I’m kind of salivating at this preview- “Evan Gordon Presents- Mystery Screening with conspiracy journalist Robert Skvarla”

Event will be on July 20th from 7-8:30 p.m.

Beijing Watermelon (1989) – I’ve never seen this Nobuhiko Obayashi film about the relationship that develops between a grocery store owner and a struggling college student, but based on the director’s varied and unpredictable output, I’m sure it’s one that demands attention.

Screens on Wednesday July 24th through Friday July 27th
