Opening Wide: ‘Little Fockers’

Little FockersThe poster for “Little Fockers” that we saw at AMC Northpark last night proudly displays pictures of the stars: Robert DeNiro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner, Teri Polo, Jessica Alba, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, with two young children in the lower left.

The all-star cast is a big selling point of the third film in the “Fockers” series — that, and the promise of the same type of comedy that characterized the first two installments — but early reviews have not been kind. For example, Eric D. Snider of Cinematical reports that the flick “would be a lot less painful to watch if its cast of victims didn’t include so many beloved actors. … It would still be terrible — the screenplay is unsalvageable — but at least then it wouldn’t feel like a punch in the movie lover’s gut.” And Kate Erbland of Gordon and the Whale concludes: “It’s this season’s entry into ‘Multiplicity’ cinema – a copy of a copy of a copy of something that was once funny, and now is just unapologetically flat.”

We missed the preview screening of “Little Fockers,” so we’re trying to keep an open mind, but it doesn’t sound good. If you decide to go, the film is opening tomorrow throughout the Metroplex, including the newly-reopened Highland Park Village Theater.
