Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Kids’ film. Nice stuff. No problems. But let’s face it, it’s no A Prophet.
Kick-Ass – Fun if a little unsettling, but a nice adaptation of graphic materials, which doesn’t always happen. But it’s got nothing on A Prophet.
The Ghost Writer – What a great year for Roman Polanski! This film, and the Swiss love, he must feel pretty good. But A Prophet makes him look like a piker.
STEVE’S CHOICE: A Prophet – Jacques Audiard’s brilliant film, with searing performances by Tahar Rahim and Niels Arestrup, is a sort of coming of age crime story, almost entirely set in the cold, violent setting of a prison. This is one not to miss, one of the year’s best films by a long shot.
