Some can’t miss material this week:
The Road – the most powerful overlooked film of 2009. The intensity of Viggo Mortenson and the desperate brutality of Cormac McCarthy, together in one emotionally grueling and yet beautifully filmed piece of cinema. John Hillcoat (of the equally desperate and powerful The Proposition) directs.
Rain Fall – “A hit man looks to protect the daughter of one of his victims against CIA assassins.” With Gary Oldman? Say no more!
Criterion’s release of John Ford’s Stagecoach – The classic western, re-upped in the best way possible: the Criterion way! ‘Nuff said.
Jack Smith and the Destruction of Atlantis – a documentary on the late underground filmmaker and performance artist through selected photos and audio of his work. This hard-to-find film is definitely worth seeing.
No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson – this terrific documentary was shown at Dallas International Film Festival and deserves your attention. Directed by Steve James (Hoop Dreams), the film focuses not only on the star player’s trial but its impact on their hometown. Great stuff.
