Classics, revivals, and more hit the screens of our area. Below are the screenings by theater, for the next two weeks.

The Texas Theater

231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/

The Texas Theater is hosting a tribute to Akira Kurosawa, including his films “High and Low”, “Stray Dog”, “Red Beard”, “Seven Samurai”, “The Hidden Fortress”, “Ikiru” and “Throne of Blood”. Check out the schedule for showings over the next few weeks.

Trash Humpers (2010) – One of the few Harmony Korine films I haven’t seen.

Screens on Thursday July 31st.

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (1985) – Part of the class of ’85 film series.

Screens on Sunday August 3rd

Troma’s War (1988) – All one needs to know is that it’s Troma and the film is about a crash landing on an island full of deadly creatures.

Screens on Tuesday August 5th

Conan the Barbarian (1982) – My word I loved this movie as a kid. The perfect sword-and-sandal epic, complete with comic book vibes and violent imagery.

Screens on Wednesday August 6th

Clueless (1995) – A special 30-year anniversary screening of the much-loved 90’s classic.

Screens on Friday August 8th

Spacy

1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station). Information about the venue can be found here

The Pear Tree (1998) – Part of the “Two By” series spotlighting the work of Iranian filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui whose “Leila” was a great film of the 1990’s.

Screens on Wednesday July 30th

Garoto (2015) – Brazilian film about a young couple who find themselves in “an enchanted place where they experience an amorous and spiritual adventure’”

Screens on Tuesday August 5th

Suroh: Alien Hitchhiker (1996) – Programmer Evan Gordon continues his passion for DTV obscurities with this film about a psychedelic trip with, well, aliens I suppose.

Screens on Thursday August 7th

Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) – Mike Nichols’ examination of milquetoast America and the simmering imbalance of marriage with always committed performances from Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Screens on Wednesday July 30th

The Living End (1992) – Gregg Araki’s film about two male hustlers and their cross country crime spree.

Screens on Tuesday August 5th

Rope (1948) – Alfred Hitchcock’s technically thrilling film stars James Stewart and Farley Granger. Poe’s “The Tell Tale Heart” realized in glorious technicolor.

Screens on Wednesday August 5th

Swoon (1992) – I’m sensing a male lovers crime spree trilogy here. Tom Kalin’s early 90’s film is basically an independent imagined recreation of Leopold and Loeb. A smart, underseen film.

Screens on Wednesday August 12th

Dallas Angelika

5321 E. Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75206. For all showtimes, events, and tickets visit https://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/dallas

Dazed and Confused (1993) – Richard Linklater’s film screens as part of the Angelika Classics series.

Screens on Monday August 4th

Doctor Zhivago (1965) – This was one of the first upper crust Hollywood classics I sought out as a teenager. David Lean could sure make them look good.

Screens on Sunday August 10th

The Angelika also continues its summer series of both Studio Ghibli films and the Harry Potter franchise.

From Dusk Til Dawn (1996) – Tarantino’s script and directed by Robert Rodriguez, this crime horror hybrid continues to grow as a cult favorite.

Starship Troopers (1997) – Masterful allegory or cheesy sci fi?

Screens on Friday August 8th

Lady Snowblood (1973) – Toshiya Fujita’s landmark revenge film that went on to inspire a dozen Tarantinos.

Screens on Saturday August 9th

Party Girl (1995) – Parker Posey in definitive 90’s form. Such a fun and cool film.
