Classics, revivals, and more hit the screens of our area. Below are the screenings by theater, for the next two weeks.

The Texas Theater

231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/

Got the jones to see some Val Kilmer on the big screen? The Texas Theater has you covered with a variety of his films over the next two weeks:

Batman Forever (1995) – screens on Thursday July 3rd

Tombstone (1993) – screens on Friday July 4th

Willow (1988) – screens on Friday July 5th

The Doors (1991) – screens on Thursday July 10th

Top Secret! (1983) – screens on Saturday July 12th

Fatal Termination (1990) – Part of the Tuesday Night Trash film series, this Hong Kong actioner is said to be over-the-top and featuring a wild car chase. The double header also includes Jean Claude van Damme in Knock Off (1998).

Screens on Tuesday July 1st

In the Mood For Love (2000) – Anniversary screenings seem to be all the rage right now, and Wonk Kar Wai’s regarded masterpiece is the latest to get the victory lap appeal. Swoony, majestically shot and scored, this 2000 film isn’t my favorite of his, but it hits the perfect spot of denied romance that’s made a comeback in the films of Celine Song and others recently. The original OG.

Screens on Friday July 4th

Follow That Bird (1985) – The Big Bird/Sesame Street movie you never knew you wanted. Watched this over and over as a kid.

Screens on Sunday July 6th

The Goonies (1985) – Screens on Sunday July 13th as part of the theater’s Class of ’85 film series.

Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films

All About My Mother (1999) – Almodovar’s film about the lives of several women in Barcelona co-starring Penelope Cruz.

Screens on Tuesday July 1st

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) – One of Fassbinder’s zillion films that broke through the art house barrier and became one of his bigger hits in the 70’s.

Screens on Wednesday July 3rd

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover (1989) – Admittedly, I don’ care for many of Peter Greenaway’s films, but he has his admirers. As far as “mainstream” goes, this film is probably his most accessible.

Screens on Tuesday July 8th

The Doom Generation (1995) – It’s hard to express how explosive Greg Aracki’s films were to the 1990’s indie movement. Brash, vulgar, DIY angry teen thoughts, and “The Doom Generation” is the apex of this milieu. Starring Rose McGowan and James Duval, this is a road movie of gender fluidity, violence, and semen that one won’t soon forget. His films also exaggerate (in a good way) how we all talked in the early 1990’s.

Screens on Tuesday July 15th

Dallas Angelika

5321 E. Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75206. For all showtimes, events, and tickets visit https://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/dallas

Studio Ghibli summer series continues with the following films: The Grave of the Fireflies on Wednesday July 2nd and Howl’s Moving Castle on Wednesday July 9th

Serenity (2005) – Joss Whedon’s extremely entertaining sci-fi extension of his popular television series really shouldn’t work, but it does. Fantastic action and sly humor- and this coming from someone who never saw a minute of the show it’s based upon.

Screens on Monday July 7th

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) – Respectable 70’s classic that rises mostly for Jack Nicholson’s iconic performance.

Screens on Sunday July 13th

DFW Alamo Drafthouse Locations

Schedule for all the locations in our area can be located here so check the site for theater availability

Piranha (1978) – Joe Dante’s low-budget answer to Steven Spielberg (and written by John Sayles).

Screens on Tuesday July 1st

Attack the Block (2011) – Breakout hit that launched the career of John Boyega sees London kids fighting off aliens.

Screens on Tuesday July 7th

Deep Blue Sea (1999) – I remember the fun of watching this in the theater during that magical year of 1999 where every film seemed to be a classic. Still fun.

Screens on Wednesday July 8th

Slither (2005) – In anticipation of James Gunn’s reboot of “Superman”, this earlier film shows he’s adept with squishy action and mordant commentary.

Screens on Wednesday July 8th

The Cabin in the Woods (2012) – Joss Whedon’s twisty horror/comedy/thriller is a terrific example of the genre, hiding most of its cards well through its entertaining run time.

Screens on Sunday July 13th

Alligator (1980)- I was going to mention earlier with “Piranha” that the other Sayles penned water horror should get some love, and here we go.

Screens on Tuesday July 15th

House (1985) – Yes, that crazy Asian horror movie returns to the big screen.

Screens on Tuesday July 15th
