Classics, revivals, and more hit the screens of our area. Below are the screenings by theater, for the next two weeks.
The Texas Theater
231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/
Withnail and I (1987) – Sort of like punk rock music on film. Bruce Robinson’s British cult classic re-emerges in theaters.
Screens on Saturday May 17th
How to Get Ahead in Advertising (1989) – More Bruce Robinson and Richard E. Grant in a film about an exec who sprouts a second head. Only in the weird 80’s.
Screens on Sunday May 18th
mother! (2017) – One of my favorite films of 2017 is Darren Aronofsky’s divisive film starring Jennifer Lawrence. I think this is a guttural feminist howl on jealousy, abandonment and paranoia.
Screens on Wednesday May 21st
Jaws (1975) – Screens on Friday May 23rd
Grave of the Fireflies (1988) – Groundbreaking anime should look incredible on the large screen.
Screens on Thursday May 29th
Mars Attacks (1996) – One of Tim Burton’s underrated efforts. Long been a favorite of my family (and one of my late father’s favorite films), Mars Attacks is the perfect blend of whimsical Burton humanity and B-movie sci-fi theatrics.
Screens on Saturday May 31st
Donnie Darko (2001) – I’ll admit I saw this once upon release and didn’t quite understand it. It’s grown over time with many as a millennial masterpiece that deserves repeat viewings.
Screens on Saturday May 31st
Spacy
1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station). Information about the venue can be found here
The Story of a Cheat (1936) – Where else in Dallas proper would one be able to see a 1930’s French film by Sacha Guitry? Support this theater!
Screens on Wednesday May 21st
The Magician (1958) – Ingmar Bergman always strays close to the edges of so many dramas, and “The Magicians” could be called art house horror way before the term existed. This film about a local town trying to decipher the magical prowess of a traveling entertainer (Max von Sydow) is really good Bergman.
Screens on Thursday May 22nd
Going Down (1983) – Aussie drama about 4 young women scrapping to find some missing money sounds intriguing. A discovery for sure.
Screens on Saturday May 24th
Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films
The Heartbreak Kid (1972) – Few actresses are as beautiful as Cybil Shepherd in the early 70’s, and Elaine May’s romantic comedy is another fine exhibition of her talents and beauty. Also stars Charles Grodin.
Screens on Tuesday May 20th
The Big Trail (1930)- Raoul Walsh’s western, with one of John Wayne’s earliest performances, gets a 95th anniversary screening as part of Cowtown Classics.
Screens on Thursday May 22nd
The Joy Luck Club (1995) – Screens as part of the My Favorite Films series.
Screens on Wednesday May 28th
Dallas Angelika
5321 E. Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75206. For all showtimes, events, and tickets visit https://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/dallas
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) – Orson Welles’ follow up to “Citizen Kane” has gotten lots of reappreciation over the last few decades. It’s sumptuous and features several terrific camera shots.
Screens on Monday May 19th
On the Town (1949) – Classic musical co-directed by Gene Kelly. Also starring Frank Sinatra and Ann Miller.
Screens on Monday May 26th
Whisper of the Heart (1995) – The Angelika continues to bring classic anime to the big screen.
Screens on Wednesday May 28th
Poetry (2010) – Lee Chang Dong’s film about an elderly woman (Yoon Jeong-hee) slowly slipping into old age as well as having to confront a horrific crime in her family.
Screens on Wednesday May 28th

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) – Reading Al Pacino’s biography has been a blast, and this film is right in the wheelhouse of his powerhouse 1970’s run of masterpieces.
Screens on Monday May 19th
Constantine (2005) – This Keanu Reeves film has its admirers.
Screens on Tuesday May 20th
28 Days Later (2002) – The trailer for the continuation of this series is one of the best of the year. Catch up with the beginning zombie plague here.
