Classics, revivals, and more hit the screens of our area. Below are the screenings by theater, for the next two weeks.
The Texas Theater
231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/
Mermaid Legend (1984) – Toshiharu Ikeda’s mid 80’s revenge film is getting some re-issue love with retrospectives around the country and it certainly has its proponents. I saw it a couple years back on a shoddy AVI file, so maybe a big screen rewatch is necessary to enhance my appreciation.
Screens on Monday March 17th
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2018) – As usual, Yorgos Lanthimos fans know what they’re getting into. Parts of this are scathing and uncomfortable. Stars Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman.
Screens on Tuesday March 18th
Godzilla vs Gegan (1972) – One of the many (original) Godzilla iterations screens for fans of the monolithic genre.
Screens on Wednesday March 19th
Fight Club (1999) – Fincher’s adaptation of the Chuch Palahnuik novel looks better every year since its release more than 25 years ago.
Screens on Saturday March 22nd
Monkeybone (2001) – Henry Selick’s animated hybrid stars Brendan Fraser. I know this was not in my wheelhouse in 2001, but I know nothing about it. Presented by Suspended Animation, which is always a good time.
Screens on Thursday March 27th
Selena (1996) – Jennifer Lopez’s Hollywood calling card as she portrays the iconic Spanish singer whose life was cut too tragically short.
Screens on Friday March 28th
Spacy
1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station). Information about the venue can be found here
Il Posto (1961) – Italian filmmaker Ermanno Olmi’s first film is a small but wonderful affair about a young man’s move to the big city and the relationships that come with it.
Screens on Monday March 17th
A Tale of Winter (1992) – More Eric Rohmer (the theater has screened all 4 of his seasons movies).
Screens on Thursday March 20th
Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films
All About Eve (1950) – Classic film starring Bette Davis has been retold and morphed many times over. See the original here as part of the My Favorite Films series.
Screens on Wednesday March 26th
Dallas Angelika
5321 E. Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75206. For all showtimes, events, and tickets visit https://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/dallas
Belfast (2021) – Kenneth Branagh’s critically acclaimed drama about life during the Troubles screens as part of the Angelika’s black and white Mondays.
Screens on Monday March 17th
Mamma Mia (2008) – Screens on Monday March 24th
DFW Alamo Drafthouse Locations
Schedule for all the locations in our area can be located here so check the site for theater availability
Jumanji (1995) – The kid friendly Robin Williams blockbuster returns to the big screen.
Screens on Tuesday March 18th
The Watermelon Woman (1996) – It’s been a great year so far for reclaiming distinctive African-American filmmaking voices (such as Charles Burnett’s “The Annihilation of Fish” making the rounds around the country), and Cheryl Dunye’s 90’s indie is even more proof.
Screens on Tuesday March 18th and Wednesday March 19th
Marie Antoinette (2006) – Sofia Coppola’s radical view of the French icon is part slacker drama and part emo music video. I loved it and here’s a great chance to see it again.
Screens on Sunday March 23rd
Play It as It Lays (1972) – I really like the oeuvre of filmmaker Frank Perry, and one of his more hard-to-find efforts gets a restoration. The film stars Tuesday Weld as an actress stumbling close to a nervous breakdown in a film that feels right at home in the New Wave American phenomena of early 70’s, while also playing like a blueprint for most indie films today.
Screens on Saturday March 29th
