Classics, revivals, and more hit the screens of our area. Below are the screenings by theater, for the next two weeks.

The Texas Theater

231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/

Naked (1993) – Mike Leigh’s bleak assault (the breakthrough role for David Thewlis) on pretty much everything through the machine-gun dialogue of a man wandering the London nighttime.

Screens on Wednesday February 19th

Bottle Rocket (1996) – Wes Anderson’s Texas-shot indie crime comedy launched the careers of so many people.

Screens on Thursday February 20th

Blade (1998) – An unlikely franchise that actually seems to get better with age, this film is presented with May May’s Nightmare drag show.

Hellraiser (1987) – a 4k presentation of the film that introduced one of the most malevolent film creatures of all time.

Both screen on Saturday February 22nd

Killing Zoe (1993)

The Rules of Attraction (2002) – Both films will feature a live Q&A with writer and director Roger Avary. Often overshadowed by his association with Quentin Tarantino, both of these films are very good representations of Avary’s style, especially The Rules of Attraction which is a criminally underappreciated Bret Easton Ellis adaptation. And whatever happened to the great Shannyn Sossamon?

Screens on two nights, Thursday February 27th and Friday the 28th

Spirited Away (2002) – Miyazaki’s animated classic screens on Thursday February 27th

Pariah (2011) – Critically acclaimed indie about a teenager navigating their adolescence in Brooklyn.

The Story of a Three Day Pass (1967) – The debut film from Melvin Van Peebles about an interracial relationship between a soldier and a French woman. Spacy is just knocking it out of the park with films that cannot be seen anywhere else!

Cache (2005) – In a long line of provocative cinema, “Cache” may be Michael Haneke’s masterpiece for the simple way it posits the paranoia of the digital video age into an internal thriller.

Screens on Wednesday February 19th

Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971) – More Van Peebles with his most recognizable effort.

Screens on Monday February 24th

Happy End (2017) – Haneke’s last film to date is not his strongest but retains his flare for the biting as we watch a well to do family struggle within their gilded walls as the world struggles around them.

Screens on Wednesday February 26th

Emma Mae (1976) – A discovery for me. Directed by Jamaa Fanaka, the film tells the story of a woman (Jerri Hayes) relocating from the Deep South to Watts, and who becomes involved with community activism.
