Fewer screenings than usual due to the holidays, but some very interesting offerings here. Get out and see a movie!
The Texas Theater
231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/
Taxi Driver (1976) – Always a good time to see Scorsese’s classic on the big screen, and this one coincides with the latest film from Paul Schrader (who scripted the film) also opening this week.
Screens on Thursday January 2nd
The Wages of Fear (1953) – One of French cinema’s most thrilling noirs is George Clouzot’s mid-50’s classic about a group of down-and-out men transporting explosive material through a jungle. Oft remade, but never quite capturing the brutal energy of the original.
Screens on Saturday January 4th
Don’t Let the Riverbeast Get You (2012) – Classify this in the wild and weird…. and that’s just from reading the description.
Screens on Friday January 10th
The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn pt 2 (2012) – Screens on Friday January 10th
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) – As a fan of this franchise as a kid, I can still remember the anticipation for this big screen adaptation. Unique, to say the least.
Screens on Saturday January 11th
High and Low (1963) – My favorite Kurosawa film, this visually magnificent and tonally perfect film about the abduction and subsequent search for the kidnapper breaks in two halves, each one magnifying and intensifying the other. Essential viewing.
Screens on Saturday January 11th
Dig (2004) – Documentarian Ondi Timoner’s fascinating rock-and-roll breakdown about the demise of not one, but two largely influential rock bands is maddening and insightful.
Screens on Thursday January 16th
Spacy
1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station). Information about the venue can be found here
Four films from independent filmmaker Charles Roxburgh will be featured on this date, including Slingshot Cops, Magic Spot, Freaky Farley, and Metal Detector Maniac
All films screen on Saturday January 11th with the filmmaker in attendance
Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films
Logan’s Run (1976) – The much-loved sci-fi film plays as part of the “My Favorite Films” series.
Screens on Wednesday January 8th
Mad Max (1979) – Watched this last year before “Furiosa” and forgot how bare-bones and stellar the whole thing is. Like a demolition derby in the desert, but George Miller’s vision of the post apocalypse is as brutal as ever and right there from the inception.
Screens on Wednesday January 15th
Rooftop Cinema Club in Downtown Fort Worth

Persona (1966) – They’re all heavy, but one of Ingmar Bergman’s most challenging (and avant garde defining) films.
Screens on Saturday January 4th
Speed Racer (2008) – I remember when this came out, people hated it and then people really loved it. Here’s the chance to re-appraise the Wachowski’s candy colored adaptation for yourself.
Screens on Saturday January 4th
A Clockwork Orange (1971) – I always say I appreciate Kubrick more than outwardly like his films, but this one is my favorite of the bunch. Coldly humorous and prescient.
Screens on Sunday January 5th
Possession (1981) – I feel Andrzej Zulawski made a few better films (“On the Silver Globe” anyone?) but Possession has stood the test of time. See Adjani’s meme freakout in real time and how it was intended.
Screens on Monday January 6th
Mind Game (2004) – Presented as part of the World Animation series. Directed by Masaaki Yuasa.
The Seven Samurai (1956) – Kurosawa’s classic gets another round of screenings.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) – A wonderful YA adaptation of the novel with a who’s-who of young stars (Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller).
All three screen on Saturday January 11th
Hot Rod (2007) – Another who’s-who of acting, this time comedians. There’s a growing cult status for Andy Samberg’s film. Maybe I should watch it again.
