Retro Active: Repertory Screenings for Dallas and Fort Worth December 6th through December 20th

Written by:

The Texas Theater

231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) – Steven Spielberg’s science fiction classic screens on Friday December 6th.

Die Hard (1987) – Yes, the action blockbuster classic really does classify as a Christmas movie!

Screens on Friday December 6th

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) – Henry Selick’s animated masterpiece will be presented with a live ballet. How cool is that?

Screens on Sunday December 8th

The Sugarland Express (1974) – Spielberg’s first real film of widespread notice receives a 50th anniversary screening. Stars a young Goldie Hawn and a host of character actors.

Screens on Sunday December 8th

Nosferatu (1922) – Consider my head blown by just watching the trailer. Silents Synched presents Murnau’s Dracula tale played alongside the music of Radiohead. A must!

Screens on Wednesday December 11th

Naked Lunch (1991) – With Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” also opening this week, the Texas Theater has a mini-William S. Burroughs festival going here. In the early 90’s, David Cronenberg also adapted one of his novels in “Naked Lunch”, which has become both an interesting outlier in his career and a much-loved attempt to frame the subtext of Burrough’s challenging works.

Screens on Saturday December 14th

The Black Cauldron (1985) – I haven’t seen this 80’s animated film, presented by Suspended Animation.

Screens on Thursday December 19th

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1963) – Jacques Demy’s candy colored musical gets a 4K restoration and screening.

Screens on Friday December 20th

Spacy

1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station). Information about the venue can be found here

The Mafu Cage (1978) – Carol Kane stars in “one the first American horror films directed by a woman”. Color me very interested. I’ve never even heard of this film.

Screens on Saturday December 7th

Getting to Know the Big Wide World (1978) – Spacy’s reflection of films of the Czech New Wave continues with Kira Muratova’s effort about a trio of people connecting on a construction site.

Screens on Monday December 9th

Black God, White Devil (1964) – A mainstay of midnight programming, Glauber Rocha’s film follows a couple into a violent Brazilian territory.

Screens on Tuesday December 10th

In the Shadow of the Blue Rascal (1978) – Regarded as a highpoint in underground avant garde cinema, Pierre Clementi’s film sounds like a mash-up of Godard’s lighter “gangster fare” with the burn-out lens-flares of Stan Brakhage. A must see.

Screens on Thursday December 12th

Equinox Flower (1958) – A later Ozu film. Screens on Monday December 16th

The River (1951) – Next to “The Rules of the Game” this is French master Jean Renoir’s masterpiece. Though the whole affair is transporting, there are two of three camera movements that take my breath away every time I watch this.

Screens on Tuesday December 17th

The Clan’s Heir is a Trans Woman (2013) – Hitoshi Ozawa’s film pretty much sums up its intentions with the title. Another film that is an introduction to me.

Screens on Thursday December 19th

Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Screens on Wednesday December 11th

Evil Under the Sun (1982) – One of the lesser-known Agatha Christie adaptations.
