Classic screenings for the next two weeks in our area. If I omit any or have suggestions, please leave a comment!
The Texas Theater
231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/
The Third Man (1949) – Carol Reed’s classic starring Orson Welles, full of stunning black and white imagery and spy-esque shenanigans.
Screens on Friday November 22nd
Winter Kills (1979) – Very underappreciated and chilling paranoid thriller about political assassinations that stars Jeff Bridges and John Huston, plus a bevy of other 70’s icons.
Screens on Friday November 22nd
Chasing Amy (1997) – Honestly, pretty much the only Kevin Smith film I can stand to watch, but he has his fans.
Screens on Saturday November 23rd
The White Ribbon (2009) – The best film of Michael Haneke’s career is a quiet, black and white exploration of the subtle menace growing in pre-Nazi Germany through the devious happenings on a small family farm. This is enrapturing cinema pounded out by a filmmaker whose whole career is meticulously framed and provocative works.
Screens on 35MM on Wednesday November 27th
Spacy
1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station). Information about the venue can be found here
Valerie and her Week of Wonders (1970) – More Czech New Wave is presented here. Directed by Jaromil Jires.
Screens on Friday November 22nd
Run and Kill (1993) – All I can say is Dallas is so lucky to have a place that rolls out Czech films one second and a Category III actioner the next. Billy Tang’s 1993 film is said to be brutal and no-holds barred.
Screens on Monday November 25th
Journey to the Shore (1999) – More Kiyoshi Kurosawa, this one is a metaphysical romance (?) that signals a bit of change for Kurosawa as he transitioned around the turn of the century into a filmmaker examining the boundaries of human relationship within unusual genre flourishes. This would make for a wonderful double feature with his film “To the Ends of the Earth”.
Screens on Wednesday November 27th
Lola Montes (1955) – Max Ophul’s classic deserves to be seen on the big screen, if nothing else than to admire his intricate camera tracking and cinematography.
Screens on Tuesday December 3rd
Red Desert (1964)- Antonioni and Monica Vitti, one of the most beguiling and beautiful actresses ever to do it… a match made in existential heaven.
Screens on Thursday December 5th
Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films
What’s Up Doc? (1972) – A blind spot in my Peter Bogdanovich filmography. Well liked screwball comedy, something he was always trying to recreate with mixed results in many of his efforts. Part of the My Favorite Films series.
Screens on Wednesday November 27th
