Retro Active: Repertory Screenings for Dallas and Fort Worth October 22nd to November 3rd

Written by:

Classic screenings for the next two weeks in our area. If I omit any or have suggestions, please leave a comment!

The Texas Theater

231 West Jefferson Blvd, Dallas TX 75208. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://thetexastheatre.com/calendar/

The Fly (1986) – David Cronenberg’s most populist film, but still squirmy nonetheless. Presented by Matt Zoller Seitz.

Screens on Thursday October 24th

Phantom of the Paradise (1974) – Mostly a Dallas-shot film, believe it or not. Directed by Brian DePalma.

Screens on Saturday October 26th

Halloween III (1982) – As a kid watching this, I was hugely disappointed by this sequel that jettisons the Michael Myers legacy for something more culturally cutting. I like it much more today.

Screens on Saturday October 26th

Cure (1997) – The great Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s most identifiable feature is still unnerving and magnificent. Recently bought the 4K blu-ray and will love to see this on the big screen.

Screens on Sunday October 27th

Nosferatu (1922) – A Halloween classic event that sees the theater presenting Murnau’s seminal silent film with a live orchestra score by The Invisible Scars.

Screens on Wednesday October 30th

Interview With the Vampire (1994) – Screens on Halloween, Thursday October 30th

Coco (2017) – Pixar’s animated film screens in honor of the Dia De Los Muertos Jefferson Blvd events on Sunday November 30th.

Spacy

1300 S Polk St #160a, Dallas, TX 75224 (located inside Tyler Station). Information about the venue can be found here

Hana-Bi (1997) – Ongoing series of “4 by Kitano” continues with “Fireworks”, which was probably the film that charted him on the international radar (but there are so many great ones before this).

Screens on Wednesday October 23rd

Arrebato (1979) – Directed by Ivan Zulueta, “Rapture” is a multi-layered assault about the psychosis of filmmaking. Once a much sought after relic in the torrent world, it’s interesting to see this film in a proper format. I respected it more than liked it when I finally tracked it down years ago, and a re-watch is necessary.

Screens on Thursday October 24th

Mano Destra (1986) – Describe as a “lesbian art film” about the boundaries of BDSM and bondage.

Screens on Friday October 25th

A Family Finds Entertainment (2005) – Leave it to the micro-cinema to always usurp expectations. This early aughts film is described as a camp extravaganza that features no budget, friend as actors, and “over the top queerness”.

Screens on Saturday October 25th

Black Cat Mansion (1958) – It’s always a great time for black and white Japanese folk horror. Directed by Nobuo Nakagawa, this film sees animals, haunted by the spirits of the deceased, take revenge on a woman. When done right, nothing matches the atmosphere and skills of this type of film.

Screens on Tuesday October 29th

Singapore Sling (1990) – Another once hotly desired avi file now saved from the underground by Vinegar Syndrome in 4K, Greek filmmaker Nikos Nikolaidis is a wild vision of (again) the boundaries of pain and fascination with the body.

Screens on Wednesday October 30th

House (1977) – Probably the perfect film to satisfy all cravings on Halloween. Screens on Thursday October 31st

Magnolia at the Modern, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

3200 Darnell St, Fort Worth, TX 76107. For all showtimes, events, and tickets, visit https://www.themodern.org/films

Clue (1987) – Screens as part of the My favorite Films series on Wednesday October 23rd

Parasite (2019) – Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar winner returns to the big screen.

Screens on Wednesday October 30th

Dracula (1931) – One of the earliest tellings of Bram Stoker’s tale, Tod Browning’s 1931 film wrestles marvelously with the transition from silent film to sound. I love two or three shots in this film- i.e. the hovering Steadicam shot that introduces Renfield in a hospital ward window and the first emergence of Count Dracula.

Screens on Thursday October 31st

Historic Palace Theater in Grapevine

300 S. Main St. Grapevine, TX 76051. For all showtimes and events, visit https://www.grapevinetexasusa.com/palace-arts-center/ And by the way, most tickets are $6.00!

Young Frankenstein (1974) – Screens on Friday October 25th

Dracula (1931) – Another venue with an opportunity to see Tod Browning’s classic.

Screens on Saturday October 26th

The Manchurian Candidate (1962) – I stand by the fact that John Frankenheimer is one of the most underappreciated talents as a director from the 60’s to 90’s. This is one of his first masterpieces in a string of many.

Screens on Friday November 1st

Citizen Kane (1941) – Screens on Saturday November 2nd

The Maltese Falcon (1941) – Screens on Saturday November 2nd

Rooftop Cinema Club in Downtown Fort Worth

235 Throckmorton St. Fort Worth, TX 76102. For all showtimes and details about this unique, open-air venue visit https://rooftopcinemaclub.com/fort-worth/venue/rooftop-cinema-club-downtown-ft-worth/

Screens on Saturday October 26th

Death Becomes Her (1992)

Beetlejuice (1988) – both screen on Monday October 28th

Halloweentown (1998) – There’s a decent documentary about the actual town this TV film was filmed in. It’d make for a nice double feature with this.

Screens on Tuesday October 29th

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) – Screens on Tuesday October 29th

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Trick r’ Treat (2009) – both films screen on Wednesday October 30th

Dallas Angelika

5321 E. Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75206. For all showtimes, events, and tickets visit https://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/dallas

Strangers on a Train (1953) – Tight, as usual-well-constructed Hitchcock that doesn’t quite always get the love it deserves.

Screens on Wednesday October 23rd

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) – This final film in the series finishes up the harry Potter series that’s been running since the summer.

Screens on Saturday October 26th

Psycho (1960) – A Hitchcock that does receive a lot of attention.

Screens on Wednesday October 30th

Chinatown (1974) – A perfect film. Saw its 4K presentation earlier this year and it’s just, wow.

Screens on Monday October 28th

DFW Alamo Drafthouse Locations

Welcome back Alamo Drafthouse. Schedule for all the locations in our area can be located here

Cat People (1942) – One of the most subversive and wonderful of Jacques Tourneur’s 1940’s horror films. See this one on th ebig screen and then see them all.

Screens on Wednesday October 23rd

Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994) – Craven’s meta horror film made just before his re-birth with the Scream franchise two years later.

Screens on Friday October 25th

Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954) – A huge blindspot in my horror film viewing, this classic launched a very successful monster movie trend that we’ve never quite stopped making (and remaking, for better or worse).

Screens on Sunday October 27th

The Guest (2014) – a 4k presentation of the recent cult film favorite starring Dan Stevens.

Screens on Monday October 28th

Halloween (1978) – Screens on Halloween, Thursday October 31st

Breakfast of Champions (1999) – I honestly remember nothing of Alan Rudolph’s adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s novel. May be time for a rewatch.

Screens on Saturday November 2nd

The Great Dictator (1941)

The Parallax View (1974) – Hmm, I’m sensing a vague, nightmarish political theme for both of these films here. I wonder why? Both screen on Saturday November 2nd

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) – Screens on Saturday November 2nd

House (1977) – Nobuhiko Obayashi’s cult classic gets this month’s slot of a monthly screening just in time for Halloween.

Screens on Wednesday October 30th

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – See this classic film presented with a set by performer Salem Moon. Tickets are $15.00

Screens on Thursday October 31st
