What’s new in independent fare this weekend?

• ‘V/H/S/2.’  A rare sequel to a horror anthology, this new collection of shorts has been receiving a higher degree of praise, especially for the segment titled “Safe Haven,” co-directed by Gareth Evans (‘The Raid’) and Timo Tjahjanto; other segments were directed by Jason Eisener (‘Hobo With a Shotgun’), Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, and the team of Gregg Hale and Eduardo Sanchez. Not previewed. (The Texas Theatre.)
• ‘Fruitvale Station.’ A superb, affecting drama, bolstered considerably by a startling performance by Michael B. Jordan. With Melonie Diaz and Octavia Spencer; directed by Ryan Coogler. Reviewed here. Highly recommended. (Angelika Dallas, Angelika Plano, AMC’s The Parks at Arlington 18.)
• ‘Only God Forgives.’ Nicolas Winding Refn reteams with Ryan Gosling for a non-narrative — and quite violent — experiment in style, set in Bangkok, Thailand. With Kristin Scott Thomas. Reviewed here. Recommended with reservations. (Angelika Dallas.)
• ‘I’m So Excited.’ The latest film from Spanish master Pedro Almodovar is said to be a musically-inclined and colorful affair in the vein of his earlier, lighter works. Not previewed. (Angelika Dallas, Cinemark West Plano)
• ‘Girl Most Likely.’ Kristen Wiig stars as a failed playwright who must move back home with her mother (Annette Bening) and younger brother. With Matt Dillon and Natasha Lyonne; directed by Robert Pulcini. Not previewed. (Angelika Dallas, Angelika Plano, and others.)
• ‘The Rooftop.’ The second feature directed by Taiwanese pop star turned actor Jay Chou is apparently a musical dance concoction. Not previewed. (AMC Stonebriar.)

• ‘The Conjuring.’ A suspense thriller, based on the true story of paranormal investigators trying to help a large family deal with an infestation of unfriendly spirits. With Vera Farmiga, Lilly Taylor, Patrick Wilson, and Ron Livingston; directed by James Wan. Reviewed here. Recommended.
• ‘RED 2.’ An action-comedy sequel. With Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins, Lee Byung-hun, and Catherine Zeta-Jones; directed by Dean Parisot. Advance word has been mixed. Not previewed.
• ‘R.I.P.D.’ Dead law-enforcement officers solve crimes on Earth. With Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, and Mary-Louise Parker; directed by Robert Schwentke. Advance word has been extremely negative. Not previewed.
