Brr! It’s warming up, so time for a new movie. Perhaps ‘BirdEater’? ‘Hard Truths’? ‘Emilia Perez’?

A flock of new movies are scheduled to open today. Dress warm and watch out for ice.

Better Man‘

British pop star Robbie Williams narrates his life story, all as he is depicted as a CGI chimpanzee, ‘cuz, you know, he feels alienated and insecure and all that. What sounds like a good idea for a music video quickly becomes tiresome, and intolerable when stretched to 134 minutes, hitting every single predictable beat. Now playing throughout the Metroplex.

BirdEater‘

A smart and suspenseful night out with the boys quickly becomes downright dangerous for young Irine (Shabana Azeez), who appears to have willingly given up her agency to her romantic partner. All is not as it seems, though. Now playing at the Alamo Drafthouse in Denton for a single, late-nite screening each day, which sounds perfect for this film. Read Joe Baker’s review for more

Hard Truths‘

Marianne Jean-Baptiste gives a searing performance in director Mike Leigh’s latest slice-of-life drama. Now playing at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas. Read my review for more

The Last Showgirl‘

Pamela Anderson stars as the titular character, facing the unplanned end to her career in Las Vegas. Now playing at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas. Read Shelagh Rowan-Legg’s fine Screen Anarchy review for more

Emilia Perez‘

The boss of a Mexican crime syndicate decides to change his life. And his sex. Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldana, and Selena Gomez star. French director Jacques Audiard mixes musical sequences and psychedelic episodes into his Golden Globe-winning drama. I appreciate the ambition, but never got on board with the director’s approach. Now streaming on Netflix, it’s back in theaters for a limited engagement, playing locally at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas.

Game Changer‘

Yes, I have no idea what this movie is about, plot-wise. Watch the trailer, though, and that may be enough to convince you. Unless, of course, you’ve already got your tickets. Now playing at Cinemark 17 and other fine area cinemas.

Den of Thieves: Pantera

Suspicions always arrive in my mind when no advance press screenings are scheduled for a new release — especially when said action movie stars Gerard Butler — but in this case, the few notes I’ve seen on social media have been positive. So if you’re looking for something a bit more broadly appealing, you may want to consider this sequel, all about a massive heist. Diamonds are involved. Now playing throughout the Metroplex.
