Make it a new-release weekend!

To complement my colleague Joe Baker’s excellent Retro Active series, I’ll be highlighting new releases in Dallas every week. Weather-wise, we have a weekend that will reach into the 60s before dipping quite severely on Monday, so get out and see a movie before the big chill begins!

Speaking of chills, all three films opening today are decidedly winter-appropriate.

‘Harbin’

An early scene features Hyun Bin struggling across a frozen lake (pictured above, courtesy of Well Go USA). If that doesn’t put you in the mood for a chilly historical epic, with fierce battle scenes, I don’t know what will.

Read my review (published at Screen Anarchy) for more. Opens today at Angelika Dallas and Cinemark Plano.

‘The Damned’

In a 19th century Icelandic fishing station, Odessa Young must confront evil, though the source of that evil may be coming from the hearts of her fishing crew. Read my review for more. Opens today at Cinemark 17 and AMC Northpark, among other locations.

‘The Monster Beneath Us’

Though I haven’t seen this one yet, and it doesn’t appear to be set in winter, the trailer is full of frightening darkness and things that go bump in the night. Sophie Osborne wrote and directed the independent British thriller. Advance reviews on IMDb are positive. Opens today; it’s slated for a single late-night screening at Angelika Dallas each evening, so plan ahead.
